Theme of the Week: We need a GPS Replacement – Now!

We all rely on GPS for our modern lives. If GPS were to go offline for more than a few hours, the disruptions would spread quickly: from navigation apps, to ATM and credit card transactions, to cell phone service, to internet, before finally the power goes out.
And it is not the position and navigation piece that is the biggest concern – it is the timing. After all, we can all survive without our driving directions for a while. But try to live without communications or power.
Indeed, this has been a concern about GPS for two decades. And despite a GPS replacement being signed into law in 2018, a backup still hasn’t been built.
The push now is to incentivize private companies to offer an alternative position, navigation and timing (APNT) system. If the United States has a GPS backup or APNT in place, the GPS satellites become less of a target.
In early 2020 the US Government punted with Executive Order 13905 and put the onus on private industry and individuals to have their own GPS backup plan.
As we highlight in our overview video, this is the opportunity that Xairos seeks to address and the topic of a TTI/Vanguard presentation by our Product and Strategy Lead, Tanya Ramond, MBA PhD: “It’s All About Time: Satellite-Based Quantum Synchronization”
Last Week’s Theme: Introduction to Xairos!

Xairos was formed in March 2019 around commercializing the quantum clock synchronization technology that we invented in 2018.
We were selected for the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) sponsored Catalyst Accelerator in April 2019, which allowed us to socialize this new technology with US Government entities and led to contracts with the Air Force, NASA, and Navy.
In early 2021 we decided to also address the broader commercial market for an alternative timing service. We were selected for the Techstars Space Accelerator class of 2021 which gave us an excellent opportunity for commercial customer discovery. We connected with 81 program mentors and over a hundred potential customers.
Our new focus is developing partnerships to build out our system and leverage existing sales channels.
To that end we were recently selected for the CDL Quantum Stream which allows us to connect with “quantum technology partners.”

 Industry News

We mentioned the Facebook Time Appliance Project last week, and one of their leads is hosting a “Transparent Clock and its Applications” event this Wednesday.

A recent blog post, “GPS Lessons from Before 9/11 Still Endanger the U.S.” emphasizes that the GPS vulnerabilities highlighted in a 2001 Department of Transportation report have not yet been addressed and “…In fact, rather than moving forward, in some areas we have regressed.”

In the meantime, adversaries are developing anti-satellite technology and the UK and other allies are not waiting around to develop alternatives.

NSR just published their report “Quantum Communications via Satellite” if you want to learn more about this growing area. One of the future themes will dive into this topic.

The More You Know…

Our goal is to deliver some basic insights on quantum communications, timing, networks, and space.
We start with a basic description of quantum technologies
Our core technology takes advantage of quantum communication systems that have been developed over decades. People often confuse this with quantum computing or atomic clocks, but it is more akin to optical communications.
